Developing Sunniside as a unique and joyful place to work and live.
Sunniside is a central area of Sunderland that is full of potential. A conservation area, opportunity sites, buildings asking for new and productive uses, and successful businesses and creative individuals hidden in buildings everywhere.
In 2023, a Place Strategy for Sunniside was developed that set out a vision for Sunniside as an exciting city neighbourhood for the urban pioneers, creatives and entrepreneurs of Sunderland. Many of these urban pioneers are already here, creating this change. The Place Strategy created a 10 year delivery plan of actions that would support this change, create the opportunities and deliver on the potential of the area.

A bit more about the project
Sunderland’s City Plan is to create a dynamic, healthy and vibrant ’smart’ city with greater opportunities for all. A cornerstone to this is to bring a residential population back in to the city centre, offering good homes and a vibrant city life. Funded by DLUHC through the Partnership for People and Places initiative, the Sunniside Place Strategy was developed to support Sunderland in taking a place-based approach to the regeneration of the Sunniside area. Sunniside is a large part of the city’s urban core and it has an important part to play in the city reaching its potential.
